Chimera

Crime Squad detective Cha Jae-hwan (Park Hae-soo) , criminal psychologist Yoo-jin (Kim Soo-hyun) , and surgeon Lee Jong-yeop (Lee Hee-joon) are investigating the serial bombings and murders that have occurred agin in 35 years, also known as the "Chimera" incident, with their own different purposes.

Episode 1
2019/8 Seoul, Jae-hwan came to the comprehensive training ground to watch the explosion investigation drill. He invited Eugene, an IED terrorist expert from the FBI, to teach. IED improvised explosive devices refer to bombs made from chemicals that can be obtained in daily life. In recent years, IED terrorist attacks have been increasing. Eugene demonstrated the explosion scene for everyone to tell everyone that there may really be a day in Korea when they see this scene. At night, someone made trouble in a secret casino and stole money. When he went home, he found a beautiful lighter next to the car seat, but it exploded when it was lit.
The next morning, the police went to the scene to investigate. The team leader's face darkened when he saw the lighter. He secretly hid the burnt lighter left in the car and immediately said it was suicide. Jae-hwan didn't think so. After all, there was no residual smell of flammable substances in the car, and the source of the fire could not be found. After forensic examination, no cause of the fire was found. Jae-hwan's words "Could it be that the car exploded by itself" made the team leader nervous. Through the forensic autopsy, it was found that the deceased did not show any signs of suicide. Jae-hwan also thought it might be spontaneous human combustion, so he asked Eugene, who had been to the United States, if this case could be spontaneous human combustion, but Eugene immediately determined it was an explosion case after seeing the photos and wanted to go and see the car.
Eugene has confirmed the car and is sure that there must be something inside. The person who set the fire at the scene is either covering up the crime scene or revealing the crime scene (to make the body findable, such as to defraud insurance money, or to create an alibi for the murderer). At the same time, the identity of the victim was tested to be Son Wan-gi. When Jae-hwan went to find Son Wan-gi, he was followed by two men in suits. It turned out that they were going to collect loan shark debts from Son Wan-gi. They learned that Son Wan-gi often went to a casino and that he had found a new dealer. When he asked here, he found out that the dealer was called doctor. A woman here seemed to know everything, knew that Son Wan-gi was dead, and even acted as if she knew what happened to Son Wan-gi, and asked Jae-hwan to be careful of his life.
When watching the casino surveillance camera, it seems that the doctor's face was captured again, but because the hat was pulled down very low, the picture was not clear. Jae-hwan traced back to reporter Son Wan-ki, who was the reporter who reported the 1984 Gyeonggi Macheon arson and murder case, which was also known as the "Chimera Incident". An unknown explosion caused the death of three people. Eugene mentioned that there was a Chimera pattern on the lighter, which reminded Jae-hwan that Team Leader Han was holding a lighter with a strange pattern at the scene.
Team leader Han was feeling depressed about the car bombing. The director knew that it was Son Wan-ki who did the car bombing, and the method was similar to the Chimera incident, so the director's face turned green. Eugene went to the scene to investigate, wondering why the murderer chose not to attack the gorgeous stage, where there would be no other casualties and property damage. The gas that caused the fire might be some kind of gas, but where did it come from? And the murderer must have found a good place to watch the scene. Jae-hwan saw that a house in the abandoned building opposite had a new window, but the building was facing east. According to the fact that the explosion occurred in the morning, it was equivalent to making full preparations for the way I can see you but you can't see me.
Team leader Han looked at the message on his phone, "But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. On that day, the heavens will pass away with a loud noise, and the elements will be dissolved with fire. The earth and everything on it will be burned up and become a cave. 416, 405", this is where Jae-hwan and Gun-young went to the abandoned building, but Jae-hwan found a man in black in room 405 and chased him but lost him. Eugene met with the blogger firefighter who had studied the Chimera incident. Almost everything the firefighter knew was known by the police, but the Chimera incident was not made public at the beginning. The firefighter actually knew about the Chimera lighter. However, the firefighter said that he later heard from others that the real cause of the fire had been found out. He received a call from Jae-hwan, but in the video Eugene saw something that looked like a metal can and found that Jae-hwan had fallen into a trap. Sure enough, Jae-hwan was locked in the room. Eugene explained that as long as there was 30% oxygen in the space, a small spark or static electricity would cause an explosion. No wonder there was no trace left in the Chimera explosion.
Jae-hwan finally chose to jump out of the window. Fortunately, Team Leader Han's car that arrived at the abandoned building following the text message gave Jae-hwan some cushion. Team Leader Han was also able to rush Jae-hwan to the hospital as soon as possible. In the end, Jae-hwan only had a fractured bone. Jae-hwan's mother was so worried and angry in the hospital. Later, Team Leader Han sent Jae-hwan's mother back and was seen by Chong-ye at the hospital gate. Chong-ye was very surprised.

Episode 2
On May 30, 1984, a man was in a hurry to buy nitric acid for school experiments. When he was about to smoke in the car, he found a Chimera lighter and it exploded. Timeline returns to the present, continuing from the previous episode. In the hospital, Chongye was a little surprised to find Team Leader Han and Jae-hwan's mother. Eugene and Jianying returned to Room 405 for investigation. Eugene found that the sequence and method of the two recent explosions were similar to those of the Chimera case. At the same time, a reporter named Kim Hyo-kyung came to the ward to ask Jae-hwan about the two current explosions. She said that Sun Wan-ki succeeded by writing an exclusive report 35 years ago, and that report was about the suspect Lee Sang-woo who was arrested in July 1984. Before that, there was an exclusive report on Lee Sang-woo's family, which was the key to Sun Wan-ki's success, and Lee Sang-woo's wife's photo was published.
At night, Eugene went to the hospital to find Jae-hwan. They talked about the murderer's original target, not Jae-hwan, but someone else. This reminded Jae-hwan that Team Leader Han had gone to the abandoned building that day. Team Leader Han was also hesitant about this matter, which made Jae-hwan suspicious. Team Leader Han was angry and asked Jae-hwan not to continue investigating. Team Leader Han felt guilty and drank alone. He felt very guilty when he thought about the torture of Lee Sang-woo. Later, he went to Jae-hwan's house to care about Jae-hwan. In fact, he wanted to see Eun-soo, but he said sad but sweet words, saying that it would be great if he could live a carefree life in Vietnam before he died. This made Jae-hwan feel that the team leader would be like a man.
The next day, Team Leader Han said that the case of Son Wan-gi was closed, which surprised Jae-hwan. Later, Jae-hwan and Gun-young took photos of Dr. Ko Jae-moon's car from Ho-dong and Gil-dong's dashcam, but the problem was that he had been in a coma three months ago. When Jae-hwan saw Chong-ye in the hospital, he immediately thought of the doctor, so Jae-hwan deliberately mentioned the death of Son Wan-gi and the Chimaera pattern to trap the doctor, saying that if the Chimaera is applied to humans, it can be a combination of a doctor who can save people or a killer who can kill people, but Chong-ye did not respond much. Jae-hwan used Chong-ye's fingerprint on the phone to search and found that there was no Chong-ye's fingerprint information in the database, because Chong-ye is not a Korean citizen, and there will be no answer unless he asks the British side. So Jae-hwan asked Eugene for help, and Eugene suddenly remembered that Son Wan-gi had a fracture six months ago, so he should be able to find the medical record, and Chong-ye appeared in the surveillance camera six months ago, so the two should have met.
The hospital administrator said that Chongye was invited to Korea six months ago and brought a relative to the hospital. The relative turned out to be Son Wan-gi. Chongye used his card to help pay the medical expenses in the emergency room, which proved that Chongye and Son Wan-gi knew each other, and Chongye deliberately lied that they did not know each other. Team leader Han received the text message that frightened him again, which almost made him collapse. When he returned home, he was knocked unconscious and kidnapped by the men in black. Jae-hwan came to the team leader's house and saw the photo of his mother and the team leader on November 3, 1984, and found a Chimera lighter. Jae-hwan compared the report in 1984 and found that Team Leader Han knew about the Chimera case, but lied to him that he didn't know.
The next day, Jae-hwan went to retrieve the data from 1984 and found out that the Chimera case was actually investigated by Team Leader Han. Now he couldn't find Team Leader Han. Jae-hwan thought it would be very similar to the case 35 years ago. According to the location of the third case, it should be an abandoned house. So he went to Macheon and really saw Team Leader Han, but Team Leader Han told Jae-hwan not to get close to him. As a result, Jae-hwan accidentally triggered the trap set by the murderer, and used water and chemicals to form a fire that burned Team Leader Han to death. Seeing Team Leader Han burn to death with his own eyes, Jae-hwan was greatly shocked and blamed himself. He and Team Leader Han were like family members. He cried while sorting out his belongings.

Episode 3
On June 9, 1984, a researcher (Ren Changxu) found a Chimaira pattern on the wall in the laboratory, and the whole space was filled with oxygen from oxygen tanks, and then the laboratory exploded. Zaihuan found the location of Team Leader Han, but accidentally touched the mechanism designed by the murderer, which triggered a chemical reaction and burned Team Leader Han to death. Now he is worried about Director Pei. After all, he is about to be promoted, but he encountered such a thing. Some deployments think that this is very similar to the Chimaira incident. At the beginning, the murderer didn't know whether he caught the right person, and he couldn't even hold a trial. He died halfway through the investigation. Of course, Director Pei didn't allow everyone to involve this matter with Chimaira (after all, he was also the relevant organizer before), so he asked other colleagues to catch the murderer within two weeks, but the forensic doctor found a Chimaira lighter on Team Leader Han's body.
Gao Guangxiu (played by Xu Junshuo) took the initiative to request to be transferred to the Special Investigation Headquarters as a team leader. Gao Guangxiu and Director Bae went to the same high school (more than 20 years apart), and his father died early. Director Bae took advantage of their friendship in the same school, so he deliberately put pressure on Guangxiu not to let the outside world implicate the case of Team Leader Han and the Chimera case. Guangxiu immediately went to the Second Serious Case Team to take away all the computer data, and asked the colleagues of the Second Serious Case Team to join the investigation headquarters, but Jae-hwan could not accept the case being handed over, so he confronted Guangxiu directly. Guangxiu also knew that Jae-hwan's emotionality was due to guilt. The forensic doctor gave Jae-hwan the Chimera lighter found on Team Leader Han to investigate, but Jae-hwan is getting more and more confused now. In addition to not knowing about the Chimera incident, he also felt that Team Leader Han has been hiding something.
Jae-hwan said during the investigation that the fire was caused by water being sprinkled. No one believed it, but after testing, it was indeed water. Jae-hwan asked Eugene to investigate the scene. Eugene deduced from the words dies irae (day of wrath) at the scene that the murderer was like a judge, just wanting to judge what crime? Eugene found that Jae-hwan's emotions were very unstable. Jae-hwan mentioned that the relationship was like family, but it turned out that Team Leader Han still had secrets. Now he realized that he had never seen through Team Leader Han, but Eugene thought that maybe Team Leader Han wanted to protect himself or someone.
The next day, Jae-hwan told everyone in the investigation headquarters that these were all serial murders, especially the Chimera lighter, which was a customized Chimera series designed by a French company, and it was a very expensive one. Jae-hwan directly linked the cases to the Chimera incident, but was immediately refuted by the people in the team. Jae-hwan directly said that he had a suspect, but the evidence he presented was not enough to become a suspect, and Chong-ye was an elementary school student 35 years ago and could not be the real murderer of Chimera, so Jae-hwan's hypothesis was rejected by Guangxiu again. At night, Chong-ye secretly went to the scene of Team Leader Han's death, and also met Reporter Jin who led a team to sneak in to the scene to do a special report.
The next day, Jae-hwan called Eugene to explain the possibility of Team Leader Han being burned to death. Although the test showed that it looked like gasoline, it was actually the reaction of "magnesium and silver nitrate" and water. Because the ingredients are prohibited from circulating in large quantities, unless it is disinfectant, Jae-hwan deduced that the murderer might be a doctor. At the same time, the surveillance camera at the door of Team Leader Han's house captured the figure of Chong-ye, so the police led a team to arrest Chong-ye, but they encountered Chong-ye with an emergency patient who needed surgery, so out of consideration for human relations, they let Chong-ye go for surgery first, and nothing was found in Chong-ye's house. Eugene discovered that Chong-ye had a large amount of sleeping pills, and the painting in Chong-ye's house immediately reminded Jae-hwan of Team Leader Han's appearance before his death.

Episode 4
On June 15, 1984, a man was burned to death by a murderer who put a Chimaira lighter in his pocket and used water and chemicals. Chongye was arrested by the police and taken to the police station. He said nothing but was very calm. Eugene said from Chongye's dress that he came from a conservative family, was polite, and did not easily show his emotions. Eugene suggested creating a sense of uneasiness so that Chongye could make mistakes. Therefore, when Jae-hwan was in charge of interrogating Chongye, he deliberately turned up the air conditioner temperature and put ice water in front of him. Chongye answered all the doubts calmly, but there were doubts, such as the scene of following Son Wan-ki's car and appearing downstairs of Team Leader Han's house, which had no reasonable explanation. Until seeing these two Chimaira lighters, Chongye actually said that the 1983 Chimaira lighter could withstand a thousand-degree fire, but the two lighters in front of him were imitations and completely melted.
From this point on, the initiative shifted to Chong-ye. He even knew that Jae-hwan was using the most basic interrogation techniques, so Chong-ye was just acting. He also knew that the police did not have much evidence and were just pretending. Eugene received a call from Sam about Chong-ye's personal background information, and asked Jae-hwan to urgently stop questioning him, because Chong-ye was a member of the British Army Special Forces SAS and had been trained in various high-pressure and interrogation techniques. However, Jae-hwan had lost control of his emotions and even attacked Chong-ye, which made everyone very disappointed.
Eugene suddenly thought that Chongye was a trained person, why didn't he defend himself just now? Instead, he did nothing. I always feel that there is a purpose. Reporter Jin proposed to report the Chimera incident and this case. Of course, the TV station would have some concerns. After all, the connection is still uncertain, and the TV station may be sued by the victim's family. So reporter Jin asked for two weeks to find evidence.
Xilun Group is currently facing the negative problem of some people being collectively infected with TH5. Some people have already protested outside. Lee Min-ki (Kim Gui-sun) seems to be biased towards Xilun Group in the parliament, but Seo Hyun-tae (Lee Ki-young) inside the group actually proposed the unethical decision of changing the packaging and still producing. At this time, Lee Hwa-jeong (Kim Hao-jeong) angrily went to Seo Hyun-tae to complain about Director Pei's subordinates going to the hospital to arrest Chong-ye, so Director Pei also promised that he would smooth over the matter, so he asked Guangxiu to release Chong-ye, but Jae-hwan was very angry about this decision. Why did Director Pei look like he was serving the group and was very polite to Chong-ye, and promised that he would only let Chong-ye appear in court as a witness, but Chong-ye saw Director Pei's profile and what he said, and suddenly remembered the policeman who was scolded for standing three or seven steps in the police station before. That policeman was the policeman he saw in the police station when he was a child.
Eun-soo seems a little strange in the small restaurant because she keeps forgetting things. Chong-ye doesn't eat or drink anything in the police station, but asks Jianying to buy two expensive cups of coffee. No one can understand what Chong-ye is doing. Eugene thinks Chong-ye is inviting people in. Eugene takes the initiative to go in and talk to Chong-ye, talking about each other's childhood, and uses the Francis Bacon painting in Chong-ye's home to dig out Chong-ye's inner pain. However, Eugene is dominated by Chong-ye, because Eugene herself doesn't know her own life experience, and she can't say it when she wants to talk about her family. Just as Eugene is about to leave, Chong-ye suddenly says, "What do you want me to say? Who is the criminal? Or who is the next round of victims?"

Episode 5
When Eugene went to interrogate Chong-ye, he always felt that Chong-ye was forewarning of the crime. However, Chong-ye said, "Instead of asking who did it, we should first ask why it was done. Nothing in the world happens for no reason, because memory is created by humans, and everything that happens now is the result of the past." This made Eugene seem to hear Chong-ye's obsession with the "past" and began to wonder who Chong-ye is. At the same time, the legal team of Xilun Hospital came to take Chong-ye home. Chong-ye returned home and recalled the memory of being lectured by Bae Seung-gwan (played by Woo Hyun) when he was a child at the police station. At that time, Chong-ye went to the police station to find his father. The police said that his father was a communist (murderer). From the conversation between the police, we can know that they tortured his father. Even the neighbors looked at and abused his mother. His mother died the next day after she fell ill.
Chongye received a letter from H, which was all about the footage of Han's follow-up filming, and he talked to someone and said that he saw the person he wanted to see (Chief Pei). The team was disappointed that Chongye was released. Hena suddenly asked Eugene about her parents and said that she could help find her parents, but Eugene refused because she had no intention of looking for them. Jae-hwan said that he had never seen his father and that he had passed away before he was born. He said that his parents had a car accident, and only his mother and Jae-hwan in her belly survived. His mother also had no memory of what happened before the car accident. It might be that the death of her husband was too much. However, Eugene said that people would find it painful to recall that memory, so they automatically buried the memory. Now Eugene wants to explore Chongye's heart, and he doesn't think Chongye is the murderer. After all, he didn't provide an alibi for himself, and it seems that he has never seen the murder scene, so he thinks Chongye might also be the pursuer.
Jae-hwan returned home and told his mother that he was curious about the past, saying that it was impossible for any of his relatives to be big chaebols. The next day, Ko Kwang-soo (played by Heo Jun-seok) focused on investigating a habitual arsonist that Team Leader Han had caught before, and had completely let go of the investigation of Chong-ye, which made Jae-hwan anxious about what to do if someone else died. However, Kwang-soo did not object to this argument, so he asked Jae-hwan to investigate whether it was possible to find the next victim, which would be beneficial to the police, and even let Jae-hwan act alone. Reporter Kim found Jae-hwan and said that the three victims of the Chimera incident in 1984 all worked in the same company, and the content did not mention the occupations of the three people at all. This murder case did not even appear in the social section, but in the economic section. The three victims were all patent developers of TH5 disinfectant, and one of them was Seo Hyun-tae (played by Lee Ki-young), who then married the daughter of the Xilun Group. The person who handled the Chimera case at the time was Lee Hwa-jeong's (Kim Ho-jeong) brother, Prosecutor Lee Min-ki (played by Kim Gui-sun).
Chief Pei went to Xu Xiantai's house to have dinner and apologize. When talking about Chimera lighters, Xu Xiantai suddenly became a little absent-minded. Chief Pei thought it was not a copycat crime because the method of this case was unknown even to the police officer in charge and Lee Min-ki. Xu Xiantai had never heard of Chongye's name, but it made Xu Xiantai feel a little uneasy when it happened again. Chongye asked the casino's owner (Ms. Huang) to find Xian Longfu, a detective who was about 60 years old, but she also advised Chongye not to look back on the past, after all, there was no benefit. In Eugene's class, Chongye suddenly asked what factors a sober person confessed when confessing. Eugene explained that a big reason was that he thought he wanted to get out of this situation under pressure or wanted to protect his family, or he thought that the truth would come out when he appeared in court.
After the meeting, Chongye went to play chess with Eugene. Eugene asked Chongye about his childhood. Chongye admitted that his father was killed and his mother died. Chongye always felt that he was powerless to resist that incident at that time. Now he returned to Korea because he had to do something, and asked Eugene not to miss him, so that he could help him. Eugene wanted to dig more memories of Chongye's childhood, and even knew that Chongye left Korea in 1984, but Chongye did not talk much about his life experience, and asked Eugene to look at people instead of just facts. The next day, Ms. Huang had found the whereabouts of Ham Longfu, and Jae-hwan followed him. In the end, Chongye was discovered by the man he suspected to be Ham Longfu, so he led him to the port and was surrounded by his younger brothers. Jae-hwan couldn't stand it and decided to help, but Jae-hwan couldn't beat these gangsters alone. Chongye thought of using some chemical agents from the car to mix and make bombs to attack those gangsters, but this picture made Jae-hwan think of Chimera.

Episode 6
The bomb that Chong-ye made successfully defeated the gang of Ham Long-bok, while Jae-hwan suddenly fainted. At the same time, Eugene discussed the current case with Xiaosha from the United States, and said that the possibility that the child was the murderer could not be ruled out. Now Eugene also tried to look not only at the things in front of him, but also at the people. This reminded Eugene of a man he met before who raised a gun sadly and wanted to commit suicide, saying "You should focus on what kind of person I am, but you only want to see the facts, not me." Jae-hwan woke up in the hospital, but Chong-ye was gone.
Eugene went to the hospital to pick up Jae-hwan and learned that Jae-hwan went to track down Chong-ye on his own without permission. Jae-hwan thought that every time Chong-ye tracked down someone, he would be a victim. This time, the person Chong-ye tracked down might also be the next victim. So Eugene went to the place where Jae-hwan was beaten yesterday and found that it was an explosive compound similar to disinfectant and brake fluid. Chong-ye found Ham Yong-bok and asked him how Lee Sang-woo died. Ham Yong-bok was horrified at first, but suddenly said that he didn't know about it. At the same time, Kang Sang-gu was gathering some explosive components for fireworks and went out with a box.
Reporter Kim was too upset about the Chimera case, so he went to his father Kim Hyung-guk to eat instant noodles, but when reporter Kim mentioned the Chimera incident, Attorney Kim was stunned for a moment. At that time, this law firm had just opened, and Attorney Kim reluctantly said that he didn't remember it. Eugene and Jae-hwan knew that Ham Yong-bok was dismissed on August 18, 1984 due to negligence in prison management, and Lee Sang-woo committed suicide on August 8, but there was only a death certificate without an autopsy. Eugene felt something was wrong when he saw Lee Sang-woo's suicide note, and the investigation headquarters was very fast in investigating this case. After receiving the report, they started an internal investigation. Jae-hwan was a little shocked to see Chief Bae's name on the arrest team.
Ham Yong-bok privately told Director Bae that someone had come to ask about the cause of Lee Sang-woo's death recently, which made Director Bae a little nervous, because he was the one who drowned Lee Sang-woo, but let Ham Yong-bok take the responsibility. Now Director Bae was very nervous and ran to tell Lee Min-ki (Kim Gui-sun) and Seo Hyun-tae (Lee Ki-young) about this matter. Lee Min-ki was just trying to pass the buck. Director Bae angrily told Lee Min-ki that he did this because Lee Min-ki was unreasonable. The next day, reporter Kim asked Jae-hwan to investigate the two surviving researchers of TH5, maybe he could find some clues, but Jae-hwan went to the hospital to find Chong-ye first. In addition to looking at the injury on his head, he wanted to ask him why he went to find Ham Yong-bok. However, Chong-ye would not answer Jae-hwan directly, but asked Jae-hwan to find the answer before asking him.
Eun-soo found some notebooks at Han's house. On June 30, 1984, the content said, "God, please forgive me. I have committed a crime today to protect this person. I pray deeply. I hope I can carry so much retribution alone." There was also a photo of a girl that reminded Eun-soo of her family days in the past. She lived in a beautiful house, had a boy and a girl, wanted to jump into the river to commit suicide, sat in Han's car, and even was caught in a fire. Eugene analyzed Lee Sang-woo's suicide note and found that it was not like a suicide note but a statement. The content distribution was not proportional, and the wording was written by one person. At the end, the resident registration number and name appeared. No one would write this in a suicide note. It was all probably written under duress. The content also showed that Lee Sang-woo didn't want to say it. Therefore, it can be determined that Lee Sang-woo was not the real murderer. At the same time, someone sent a package to Ham Yong-bok. There was a picture of Chimera in it, and there was a text message to Han, and then the book caught fire.

Episode 7
Ham Yong-bok received a book and burned himself after self-ignition. Jae-hwan read Lee Sang-woo's suicide note and after Eugene's analysis, he understood that the murderer was targeting the Chimera Investigation Team in the past. Eugene believed that this was the murderer's motive for the crime, to help Lee Sang-woo avenge, and the statement was false, which meant that someone was hiding something. When Director Bae found out about Ham Yong-bok's affairs, his face turned green.
Jae-hwan ran back to the police station to tell Kwang-soo that the Chimera incident was the starting point of this serial murder case. At the lake, Chong-ye and Kim Hyung-guk talked about Lee Sang-woo, saying that they had been admitted to the law department together, but Lee Sang-woo had no money to go to college because of his poor family background. Chong-ye has been investigating the truth, but the relevant personnel in the case files have disappeared.
